Republic of India
Heads of State of the Republic of India
History
The office of President of India was created with the adoption of the Constitution of India, which came into force on January 26 1950 and transformed the country from the Dominion of India into a republic. The presidency replaced the British monarch as the formal head of state, while most executive authority remained in practice with the prime minister and the Council of Ministers. The first president, Rajendra Prasad, had previously served as president of the Constituent Assembly and symbolized the continuity between the independence movement and the institutions of the new republic. The constitution established India as a parliamentary system in which the president exercises executive power largely on the advice of the elected government, while also performing important ceremonial, constitutional, and supervisory functions.
The president is elected indirectly for a five-year term by an electoral college composed of the elected members of both houses of the national parliament and the elected members of the state legislative assemblies. Although the office is intended to be politically neutral, most presidents have had prior careers in party politics or public service. Early presidents such as Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Zakir Husain helped establish the largely ceremonial and non-partisan character of the presidency. At the same time, the constitution grants the president certain important reserve powers, particularly during periods of political uncertainty, including appointing a prime minister when no party commands a clear parliamentary majority and formally proclaiming states of emergency.

Deputy Heads of State of the Republic of India
History
The office of Vice-President of India was established alongside the presidency by the Constitution of India, which came into force on 26 January 1950. Modeled in part on other parliamentary systems but with distinctive features, the vice presidency was designed to provide continuity in the event of a vacancy in the presidency, while also serving an ongoing institutional role within the legislature.
The vice president is elected indirectly for a five-year term by an electoral college consisting of members of both houses of the Parliament of India, in contrast to the broader electoral college used for the presidency. Unlike many other vice presidencies, the office is closely tied to the legislative branch: the vice president serves ex officio as Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of parliament), presiding over its proceedings and maintaining order, but does not vote except to break ties. This dual role reflects the hybrid nature of the office, combining a constitutional standby function with an active parliamentary responsibility.
The vice president’s most significant constitutional function is to act as president in the event of a vacancy, absence, or incapacity. Several vice presidents have been called upon to serve in an acting capacity following the death or resignation of a president, ensuring continuity at the head of state. In practice, the vice presidency has evolved as a largely non-executive and politically neutral office, though most officeholders have had significant prior careers in politics, diplomacy, or academia.
